CHARACTER
CHARACTER NAME: Sugar
SERIES: A Little Snow Fairy Sugar (Chitchana Yukitsukai Shugaa)
CANON POINT: End of episode 1
LOSS: Her memories of Saga, the human who can see fairies. Saga saved Sugar from starving on her first day in the human world. She also provided (somewhat reluctantly) her shelter during Sugar’s stay. Later on, they become very close friends. This loss will make it far more shocking that residents can see Sugar.

ABOUT THE CHARACTER:

Sugar is an apprentice snow fairy, a beginner among season fairies. For most of her life, she lived in the fairy world. There she went to school and learned about the seasons, magic, music, and other season fairy lessons. Apprentice season fairies can choose what type of fairy they want to be, but they typically follow in their parent’s footsteps. Sugar’s mother is a famous snow fairy. Even the wisest and most talented season fairies admire her skill. Sugar loves her mother and hopes to grow up just like her.

So she decided to take an extra curricular trip to the human world as her next step towards becoming a full-fledged season fairy. There she would be expected to practice her magic and collect “twinkles.” Each apprentice fairy is given a seed for a magic flower, which must be planted in their new home. Finding twinkles will make their magic flower grow. When it fully blooms, they graduate and return to the fairy world. The search for twinkles is said to be the most important training for young season fairies.

Sugar ended up in a German town called Muhlenberg. However, Sugar was not fully prepared to live on her own and, unsure of where to go, soon found herself weak and famished. That is when a human girl offered Sugar a waffle, which she quickly gulped down before passing out. She woke up later in the human’s house. Unlike most would be in an unknown environment, Sugar was not worried. Instead she excitedly started exploring in search of more food. Upon realizing that the human girl named Saga could see her, Sugar immediately tried to befriend her. She became frustrated when Saga, convinced that Sugar was an illusion, ignored her. Stubborn as ever, Sugar got Saga’s attention with a magical demonstration before they both went to sleep.

When it comes to season fairy duties, Sugar takes her job very seriously… or at least she would like to think so. In reality though, Sugar acts very childish and undisciplined. She sleeps in on training and regularly forgets important tasks. For instance, she forgot to plant the magic seed, which her teachers stressed was the first thing they should do in the human world. Sugar is also somewhat of a klutz, falling from high places or smashing into things. Though Sugar keeps saying she wants become a full-fledged season fairy soon, her actions tend not to reflect this goal.

This irresponsibility often gets her in trouble, though it is rarely intentional. Sugar is a good girl. She just does not think things through. One time she made it snow in a hot climate in order to cool some farmers off. Instead of appreciation, the humans became quite disturbed by the unusual weather. Messing with the seasons’ natural order is against the rules, and Sugar was severely chastised for it. As she is still young, Sugar makes plenty of mistakes. Often this happens when she is trying to help others and overreaches her limits. When she tries to help Saga around the coffee shop, for example, she spills coffee and falls into the sink. She didn’t stop to consider how her size would affect these tasks. Her pride and stubbornness also get away with her sometimes. When her magic flower started growing, she lied about finding a twinkle in order to save face.

Like many kids, she is super energetic and curious. Sugar is very naïve about the human world. Human food, belongings, and customs are all new to her. Therefore she asks lots of questions, sometimes to the point of being annoying. If she does not get answers, she will look for them herself. This usually involves her zooming around, exploring, and getting into things she probably shouldn’t.

Despite her faults, Sugar is a very kind and friendly fairy. She clearly loves her friends and is very openly affectionate. When excited or greeting someone, Sugar showers them with hugs and kisses. Kisses on the nose and cheek are extremely common. She does not seem to perceive any romantic connotation in kissing.

Sugar has a strong caring streak too. Her greatest wish is to create snow that will make people happy. Whether she knows someone or not, she will work hard to cheer them up. When her friends are sick, Sugar does her very best to care for them until they are better. Sugar knows her antics often cause her friends trouble. She doesn’t want her friends to worry about her, so Sugar will occasionally hide her problems from them. She can also be very protective, and will run headlong into danger to protect the people she loves. For example, when Saga was being attacked by two other apprentice fairies, Sugar jumped in to save her. When someone is attacking Sugar personally though, she is more likely to run, as she is not experienced enough to use snow magic in defense.

Although Sugar seems like your typical shoujo character, she is not a pushover. If Sugar thinks someone is being mean to her, she will stand up for herself. In fact, Sugar speaks her mind more often than not, and boy does she have a loud voice for such a tiny body! She can be bit of a crybaby at times though. When Saga gets angry at her, Sugar is prone to tear up or run away. During their conflicts, she tends to oversimplify the issue unless someone explains to her the other side. However if Sugar realizes she did something bad or hurtful, she will apologize immediately, even if it was a mistake.

Sugar likes playing, snow, and food! She especially loves sweets, though she will certainly try other flavors. The only time she will turn down food is when something is seriously bothering her. Waffles are her favorite because they were the first food she ate in the human world. However, she mispronounces them as “waffo.”

In other words, Sugar acts like a kid, because she is still young and inexperienced. But this childish nature can also be endearing. She is a kind-hearted fairy who wants to make people happy. Although Sugar frequently makes her friends worry, she repays them with love and kisses.

ABILITIES: Sugar is a season fairy, a being which controls the weather through music. Season fairies have different specialties, like sun, rain, snow, wind, or clouds. While it is implied fairies can change their expertise if they want, most stick with their original specialty. Each fairy has a musical instrument which creates their magic. Sugar in particular uses snow magic. She uses her flute-like instrument to create snow, though she’s still not very good at it. Beginner techniques include making a single snowflake or a giant snowball. When actually she does her magic correctly, Sugar is capable of making snow fall, even indoors. She can also play music without any magical effects.

As a winged fairy, naturally she can fly. Season fairies also seem to be able to use their magic to make humans float or slow down a fall. However, this is an unusual technique which requires a great deal of magic. The one time Sugar did this, she had two other apprentice fairies helping. Sugar would have difficulty holding a human up on her own.

So far, her magic is rather unreliable. Sugar will need to practice more before she can control the weather.

THIRD-PERSON WRITING SAMPLE:

Her first day in the human world and Sugar was already having second thoughts.

Things had been different when Sugar just arrived. She spent the first half of the day flying over the town, admiring all the pretty human houses. The scale was amazing! Sure, adult fairies had told her time and time again how large the human world was, but it never really clicked until she was way above the rooftops looking down. It felt like she was on the tippy-top of the world. And the humans! Even the smallest ones could dwarf her easily. Yet despite their height and lack of wings, humans acted just like fairies would. They would smile when they were happy and raise their voices when they were mad. She looked on as a group of young humans played, laughing at the new games they thought up. The fairy could have spent all day watching them. She did in fact, and now was paying for it dearly.

The young fairy flops down, too exhausted from her adventuring to fly any further. By now she was supposed to have found a home. Instead here she is, sitting on a wooden box in some back alley. Food could bring her strength back… but the food that she had packed was long gone. The last of it had been munched about an hour back.

A rain fairy’s violin starts to play, bringing down a heavy shower, but the music is drowned out by her growling stomach. Oh, if only she hadn’t snacked during the trip between worlds. Then she would still have some food left. The young apprentice thought mournfully on her last meal as she watched the rain fall. Maybe if she played her song, the rain fairy would find her. Or Pepper and Salt might help. Oh, she was so hungry…

Sugar blinks, finally noticing the presence of another. A human girl stands next to her resting place, taking shelter from the rain. Her heart leaps up for one brief moment – Help at last! - but that hope quickly dims. ‘That’s right… humans can’t see season fairies,’ Sugar thinks weakly, before collapsing onto the hard wood. Her stomach is so empty, it hurts. Was she going to die out here, without ever finding a twinkle?

But then a strong aroma fills the air. Opening her eyes, Sugar finds a huge, delicious smelling… well, something… held in front of her face. Could it be… human food?

“Here. Eat this,” the giant girl whispers. Sugar barely registers her words before taking a tentative bite.

It was good! Really, really good! Sugar snatches the meal and begins wolfing it down. She doesn’t think about how large it is, or even what it could be. Her main priority is devouring the food lest it disappear. It doesn’t occur to Sugar that eating so fast was a bad idea until she suddenly felt drowsy. Too much food, too much flying. Sugar feels the vague sensation of slipping, falling, when she’s caught by a soft warm surface. Just like her mother’s snow…

FIRST-PERSON JOURNAL SAMPLE:

Wow! What is this place? It’s soooo big!

[A tiny fairy darts around, exploring the lobby with the enthusiasm of a small toddler. (This might not be surprising, as she doesn’t look much older than one.) Zooming over tables, under the chairs, and round and round the chandlers, her eyes sparkle with excitement.]

I bet I could find tons of twinkles here! But where should I start…?

[Then the fairy notices a passerby. Giggling, she flies over.]

Hey, you can hear me, right? Do you know where I can find a twinkle? It’s really important that I find one. Oh! And could I have some tasty snacks too? Like waffos! Hello? Hellooooo…? [She huffs, putting her little hands on her hips.] Are you even listening?

INTENT: Overall, I feel Sugar would be a nice change of pace for me. I want to try a more light-hearted character, someone who could cheer up the other residents a little. Sugar seems like a cute, fun-loving girl who would easily make friends. She would also be less inclined to get involved in super serious plots, unlike my other character. Plus I’d like to take a shot at the challenges a tiny character would bring.
